This is not a garden blog, but you might see an article concerning gardening. It is a blog about me and the cultivation of my life. This is a place where I air my opinions and ideas. There will be stories about what is happening or has happened. I like to write poems, some will be good and some will be bad. I am never bored, I hope you won't find what I write about boring. Thank you for sharing time with me.

SEVENTY, NOT SENILE

My temples are gray around the ears,
But I look younger than my years,
I 'm fortunate with the genes I was given,
From my dad and my mom in heaven.

Today a lesson I was given,
When to the ER, I, by myself was driven.

Not once, but three times I was,
Offended by what someone does,
I was spoken to like I was ten,
Over and over and over again.

First they acted like I couldn't hear,
Then insulted me by calling me dear,
They spoke to me in a Baby voice ,
Telling me I had no choice.

If it was medicine I wanted,
With an ex-ray I was taunted,
It was a soft tissue injury,
Could be seen if you didn't hurry,

The diagnosis would confirm,
But they made me wiggle like a worm,
It was how the institution C Y A's,
Another way they make medicare pay.

I went in for a strained bicep muscle...I knew it wasn't broken because I had used it for two days while it was only a minor pain.  I knew there was no pain in the shoulder or the elbow and the only pain I had was in the outer muscle on the arm. Heat and cold packs hadn't helped the inflammation.  My Tens unit did not help intercept the pain.  Aspirin and Advil did not even take the edge off the pain.  I went to bed on the 2nd day thinking to myself that the third day is always the worst.  When I woke up it started yelling at me big time and through the day became worse.

It was nightmare on Elm Street. The pain was excruciating when I used the muscle.  If I held it close to me and did not stretch it out it got better but didn't go away.   I only wanted a small prescript for a couple of nights pain pills so I could sleep.  I knew the arm would be well within the next week if I was careful with it.  Instead I was made to jump through hoops and get an ex-ray I didn't need and put the radiation in my body I didn't need. BTW.....October 27 I was in the same place having 5 ex-rays I didn't need..I should have been sent for an MRI for them to see what they needed to see.

When I asked why I wasn't sent for the MRI first,  I was told they had to make sure there wasn't something else causing the condition.  It seems to me the hospitals are milking the system to get as much as they can at the patients expense.  There is a saying, "Buyer Beware".   Aren't we all buyers when we are seeking health care?  We are at the "Mercy" of  providers.  How come there is never a list of prices for us to see up front?  We never find that out until the insurance bill comes.

It would be nice to know what they are charging the insurance for the services they render us before they do the procedure.  I shop department store ads for things I need.  Shouldn't I be allowed to shop Doctors for the services I need and then present my card for them to recoup the charges...isn't it like a charge card which has money stored to use for their particular services.

I really wish they would realize I am an adult who just happens to be 70, I am not senile.

HANUKKAH, Eight Nights

The Dinner table with good china was set,
It was the eighth night of Hanukkah, the candles lit,
There were glasses for water and wine,
Setting the scene for a good time.

It was a gathering of the two of us,
Hunny wondered why make the fuss,
It's not like it's the Sabbath, which we keep,
No Hanukkah celebration, he won't loose sleep.

I went ahead doing my thing,
Dinner to the table I did bring,
A Broccoli dish for a little green,
Roasted vegetables on a plate was seen.

A Challah, still warm inside,
On the table did not long reside,
Hunny slathered it with lots of butter,
Which we used to get from a Cow's udder.
(Yes, we used to milk our own cows and Goats).

The Chicken was one I didn't make,
Hunny, from the rotisserie did take,
Saving me time and energy,
Showing how much, he does love me.

The last night, alone we were,
That situation did not deter,
The happiness we felt on the occasion,
Remembering past Hanukkahs with elation.

I hope every one was able to make latkes during the holiday.  If not here is an easy recipe to fix anytime not just for Hanukkah.

Latkes, Glo's Quick Way
(when I don't have time to grate onions and peel potatoes)
Yes we had them on the last night, they just wouldn't write into the poem.

1 package "Simply Potatoes",  "Shredded Hash browns") in the refrigerated section of the store. (Our store has them in the deli)  It is Not a freezer product, If they are frozen don't buy them.  My Daughter told me about using this product for Latkes.  After using them I will never go back to grating my own unless they are not available.

mix together:
1/4 cup flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 2-3 teaspoons onion powder (make sure it is combined real well.)  BTW, I grabbed the garlic powder by accident last night.  How were they?  They were good, but not what we expect in our latkes.

Use a large bowl and a fork, toss the shredded potatoes with the above  dry ingredients.  Make sure it is evenly mixed.

Scramble thoroughly 2 eggs and 1 teaspoon water in a cup.  Then use your fork and toss the eggs into the potato mixture.

Have a large skillet with an 1/8-1/4 inch of oil heating on the stove.  When a couple of drops of water sizzle when dropped into the pan it is hot enough to fry latkes.  (you don't want your pan scorching hot.  You want it about the hot you fry bacon or chicken on.)

Use your fork to pick up about a heafty tablespoon of potatoes and place in the skillet.  Smoosh it down flat so it is thin.  Fry till golden on one side then flip and fry on the other side.  Sometimes you have to flip them twice to get the color you want.  These will be lacy crispy latkes.

When done, take out, drain on paper towels and sprinkle lightly with salt...eat right away.  These don't like to be kept warm in the oven....Hunny will gobble them up as soon as they hit the paper towel.  BTW, you can't eat just one!

WHAT HAPPENED 1969

On June third 1969, a second miracle occurred in our lives.  We were never ever supposed to have any children much less two.  In that year there was no ultra sound.  We did not know the sex.  We figured the baby machine was fixed since we became pregnant so quickly. Her brother was born the 29th of January 1968 and she was born the 3rd of June 1969.  We were hoping for another boy and figured we'd have two girls after them.  This turned out not to be in the cards for us.  We are so glad we had our two children.

In this day and age, family planning like that is possible.  We could have had the larger family.  But then it wasn't available to the common man.

We even had a name picked out.  Jack for his grandfather who had just passed away.  It never even occurred to us we should be prepared with a girl's name.  But a girl we had.  I wish I had the two week old pictures to show you on the computer.  She had lovely long black curls.  Her hair never fell out like some babies do.  It just started coming in blonde.  At 11 months she had this wonderful crop of blonde curls, which crowned a head with eyes so bright and a smile which made everyone smile who saw her.  She did get the name Jack.  She is Jacqueline Anne (Anne for the Aunt we lost).

When she was 18 months she hated to have to sit down for anything.  She had this fetish for shoes.  We knew then we had a diva on our hands.

It did not matter where she was, if someone took of their shoes she was slipping her feet into them and strolling around the room.  She didn't care if she still had her shoes on or not, if the shoe fit she wore it.
She is very disgruntled she had to sit still for a family photo.

At 2 1/2 she loved to dress up.  Even if it meant wearing a cap and an outfit mommy made.  In fact she wouldn't wear slacks or shorts without expressing her dismay.

I had to zigzag all the hems in her dresses so she wouldn't rip them out.  I had a New Kenmore, top of the line sewing machine.  It had boxes of cams.  She always wanted the "Ducky" designs.

Now, she wouldn't be caught in that outfit even at a costume party....lol.

At 3 1/2 spunky, daring, fearless, all describe Jackie.  Anything her brother did she knew she could do.  The only reason she was in a pants outfit is because I told her she couldn't play out side in a dress.

She's 5 years old and heading off to the first day of kindergarten.  As you can see Miss Tossel Tops has to do her own hair.  She hated for anyone to brush it.  In fact she had temper fits when it came to hair washing time.

If you notice the hair is short on the sides.  She decided to borrow my sewing scissors and cut her hair so she wouldn't have to brush it. (I was in the barn milking)

Also notice the tights.  She wouldn't wear shorts under her dress.  I knew she was going to be on the monkey bars the minute the doors opened for recess.  She very condescendingly consented to wearing them.

She wasn't just dressed up because we had a party to go to.  She loved to dress up.    She was 6 this year.  The wheel they are holding they left leaning against a red bud tree.  It was never moved after that.  The tree bark grew around the wheel, swallowing the top rim.

The years went scurrying by and she turned 13.  She was adored by everyone she met.  But she was especially her Daddy's girl.

At 22 she took our breath away as a gorgeous bride.

At 32 She gave us two gorgeous grand children.

On June 8, 2008 She surprised us at our 45th anniversary party.  She was 40 June 3.  It looks like June, 1969 was a very good year.

Tomorrow she will be 45.   I wish we could wish away the 1000+ miles and be there.  Her Dad is with her brother on an aircraft carrier and I am home taking care of the dogs, cats and parrots.

We want her to know how proud we are of the woman she is and how glad we are she is our daughter. We want to thank her for the wonderful grandchildren she has given us.  We wish her the Happiest Birthday.

We love you Jackie.  Here is a little list of things which were happening your first year of life.
I have made notes in color about how they affected us.

1969 On July 20th one of mans crowning achievements occurred when American Astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the Moon and uttered the immortal words "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." .
We were glued to the television for hours watching the landing unfold.

The opposition to the war continued to increase with more and more attending anti war demonstrations and demanding that the US withdrew from Vietnam.
Dad was a teacher in a high school during this military engagement.  He had students who were drafted when they graduated.  We never knew if they came home.

The music came from groups including the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin and the Beatles and the most famous music festival of modern times "WOODSTOCK" took place on a New York Farm onAugust 15th to August 17th with more than 400,000 avid music fans attending to see the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Crosby Stills Nash and Young and others perform live. fashions reflected the anti war sentiment with military jackets adorned with peace signs, and other trends including long unkempt wild hair and headbands showed the feelings of anti establishment felt by the youth.
Even though Dad was a folk guitarist we were astounded by everything which was going on in the 60's. We were very "Ozzie and Harriet".

GREAT COOKING PANS FOR WOOD STOVES

FISHER BABY BEAR
Warmer days, snow's gone,
Mother Nature, this time won,
Nights, towards morning, chill,
Getting out of bed a thrill.

Breezes through windows drift,
Giving us a spiritual lift,
I shiver, starting a fire,
Fulfilling immediate desires.

Frying pan, on the stove set,
Bacon, ready in minuets,
Perfection, over easy eggs,
Fried in the bacon dregs.

My day began with a chill,
I'm warm now, on my hill,
Breakfast over, soup pot's on,
All the dishes, are now done.

I can't tell you how happy I was when I awoke to the furnace coming on.  Why, the why is because that meant the house's temp was cold enough I could start a fire in the wood stove.  We don't have the stove for heat all the time.  It is a little stove, not the size to heat the 1000 square feet by 19 ft tall area.  If the electric is off in a storm and it is Zero outside it will heat the area as long as I am there to feed it wood and keep a roaring fire in it.

This morning I went to look up info on our little stove to share with you.  I received a surprise.  My stove has become a collectors item.  Except for needing a good exterior cleaning and painting our stove is in great condition.  We bought it probably the second year they were manufactured.  It has been in yearly use since then.  We also bought a Mama bear stove.  It is in our basement (I wish we had used it upstairs.)  We can't switch them because we had the flue out the back go directly into the fireplace  system.  It has its own chimney with the fireplace and the other stove.
As you can see in  the picture, we have a small "camp" oven which fits on top the stove.   It does an admirable job of baking if it is cold enough out side to crank up the fire really hot.

These muffins weren't made today.  They are from a colder morning.  The challenge with the little oven is to find pans which fit the shelves.  They are not removable.  I do have another oven which has sliding shelves but it doesn't have a thermostat, it is a very ancient one.
It doesn't have the insulation the one I am using does.  This one bakes with a more even temp.

The muffin pan you see barely fits.  I have a square stainless pan which works.  Several of my corning wear dishes work well.  Of course cake pans and bread pans work well.

This brings us around to pans for the stove top.  Cast iron of course are fabulous.  Sometimes it takes a lot to preheat them to cooking temp.

I am crazy for "All Clad" Pans but recently I have found two pans which outshine them on the wood stove and on the conventional stove (we have electric).  I happened on one pan at the re-sell-it shop.  It was a medium size skillet.  Everything I have is either small or humongous I hadn't a medium size frying/sauteing pan.  This pan had a thick disk on the bottom and I wondered if that would help or hinder.  It was made by Revere ware in 1986.  It was called "Triply"  It has been discontinued.  They designed it for use with the new flat top stoves which came out then.  This is my very favorite pan, it's only draw back it doesn't come in a larger size with straight sides.

If you have a wood stove you like to cook on, I recommend you procure one for yourself.  The series came in a stock pot and a 9 inch fry pan and a 1 quart sauce pan.    The pan comes up to cooking temp almost immediately. If the stove is real hot I have to use my antique heat diffuser to control the heat.  The pan works even better on an electric stove.  I can crisp fry things on the low burner setting once it has been preheated.

I was wishing I had the stock pot when a local grocery ran a promotional.  It was earn points through purchasing groceries and exchange them for cook pans.    I really wasn't interested but we shopped there anyway so the points were collected.  Hunny does the shopping so I hadn't seen the items.  When it came time to redeem the points I told hunny to get the stock pot I can always use another large pot to blanch in.

It turned out to have a triply disk on the bottom.  I had never heard of the brand before so was skeptical of the quality.   It was "Thomas Rosenthal professional cookware".  When I looked it up it evidently is mainly sold through promotional events.    The stock pot was 8 qts  stainless steel with a glass lid.  It did not have Teflon interior (which I would have thoroughly rejected).

Both of these pans I highly recommend.  They are almost no stick when you use the old adage, "Hot pan Cold oil, food won't stick."  They hold heat and cook at lower temps than other pans I have tried.
Clean up has been a breeze.  If there are cooked on bits....a little soaking or light scrubbing with a plastic scratchy pad usually takes care of it.

Happy cooking.   BTW...I have no affiliation with any cookware  manufacturer I am just a very satisfied consumer.
